fleur de lis royal pendant French fleur de lys pendant after an original of the beginning of the 15th century, where Joan of Arc ported this heraldic symbol, a golden lys on blue ground, the later symbol for the french kingdom. The fleur-de-lis true origins with French monarchs may stem from the baptismal lily used in the crowning of King Clovis I. The French monarchy adopted the Fleur-de-lis for their royal coat of arms as a symbol of purity on the conversion of Clovis I. One version explains that an angel descended with the Fleur-de-lis ampulla to anoint the king. The thus anointed Kings of France later maintained that their authority was directly from God. King Charles VII ennobled Joan of Arc s family on 29 December 1429 with an inheritable symbolic denomination. The Chamber of Accounts in France registered the family' s designation to nobility on 20 January 1430. The grant permitted the family to change their surname to du Lys.
This pendant made in brass with a gold plated lys on enamelled blue ground is a copie of a pendant of this period, found in France, today in private collection.
