Product Details

reproduction of a 1st century sealbox found in Vindonissa, Switzerland. Legion' s motif: Capricorne or eagle
These kind of seal boxes were used to protect important and secret documents written on wax tablets.

The metallic boxes were fixed by small nails on one side of the tablet, passing trough the small holes on the boxes grounds.

When the text was written in the inner sides of the tablet, the tablet was closed and fixed by a small cord passing through the side hole of these sealboxes. When filled up with beeswax, the seal was stamped into the hot wax and the sealbox was closed.
So, if somebody had opened this waxtablet without permission, he automatically broke up the seal inside the box and it was clear that this dokument wasn' t secret anymore.

datation: 1st century AD
