After a find from Cologne, Germany, 1st century AD. Un amethyste is held by a zigzag setting , a form very popular in the 1st century BC up to the 1st century AD. The engraving on the intaglio gemstone shows the goddess Diana together with her little houndog.

We know a lot about amethysts in roman time by the older Plinius :

The best quality came from India, Jordanie (Petra) and Egypt.
He was worn as a protection against drunkenness and poison.
Hinges
silver 925 partially goldplated 24 ct., entirely handmade.
The original from Cologne was made out of gold and was decorated with an orange carnelian.
