Product Details

After a find from Arles, South of France, dated into the 16th century.

Fede means faith or fidelity and is shown on the ring in the clasped hands of two right hands one female and the other male.

It may have been a betrothal, or engagement ring , a traditional motif which first appeared in Roman times when they represented a legal contract the dextrarum iunctio (giving or joining of right hands)

Weddings have not always been sealed by the exchange of rings. For a long time, in their place, there were gestures such as holdings the hands or using knots and exchanging food and offers. It's from the late Middle Ages that the rings become the socially visible sign of the celebrated marriage.
